International Day of the Girl Child Outreach Programme

In partnership with Rescue Hands Initiative, PAAN commemorated the International Day of the Girl Child through a community outreach programme focused on promoting girls' health, dignity, education, and wellbeing.

As part of the initiative, sanitary pads and menstrual hygiene materials were distributed to schoolgirls, accompanied by awareness sessions on menstrual health, personal hygiene, self-confidence, and the importance of girls' education and empowerment. The programme contributed to reducing period poverty, supporting school attendance, and empowering young girls with the knowledge and resources needed to thrive and achieve their full potential.

Background

Girls and young women continue to face challenges related to menstrual hygiene management, access to education, and gender-based inequalities that can hinder their personal development and wellbeing. Period poverty, inadequate menstrual health education, and limited access to hygiene products often contribute to school absenteeism, reduced self-confidence, and social stigma among schoolgirls. To address these concerns, PAAN, in partnership with Rescue Hands Initiative, commemorated the International Day of the Girl Child through a community outreach programme focused on promoting girls' health, dignity, education, and overall wellbeing.

The programme combined the distribution of sanitary pads and menstrual hygiene materials with awareness sessions on menstrual health, personal hygiene, self-confidence, and girls' empowerment. The initiative aimed to equip young girls with the knowledge and resources necessary to thrive and reach their full potential.

The Challenges

The programme sought to address several key challenges affecting schoolgirls, including: Limited access to sanitary pads and menstrual hygiene products among vulnerable girls. Period poverty, which contributes to discomfort, stigma, and reduced participation in school activities. Insufficient knowledge of menstrual health and personal hygiene practices. School absenteeism linked to menstruation and lack of menstrual hygiene resources. Low self-esteem and confidence resulting from social misconceptions surrounding menstruation. Persistent barriers to girls' education, empowerment, and equal opportunities.

Solution

To address these challenges, PAAN and Rescue Hands Initiative implemented the following interventions: Distributed sanitary pads and menstrual hygiene materials to support girls' menstrual health needs. Conducted awareness sessions on menstrual health management and personal hygiene practices. Educated participants on the importance of self-confidence, self-worth, and personal development. Promoted girls' education and empowerment by encouraging school attendance and active participation in learning. Raised awareness on the importance of protecting the rights, dignity, and wellbeing of girls. Fostered a supportive environment where girls could openly discuss menstrual health and related challenges. The programme contributed to reducing period poverty, improving menstrual health awareness, supporting regular school attendance, and empowering young girls with the knowledge, confidence, and resources needed to succeed academically and socially.
